Austin, Texas-As temperatures in central Texas begin to drop, the Austin Fire Department (AFD) reminds local residents to be careful when using space heaters.

The reminder was issued after the department responded to a fire that broke out in the early hours of Friday morning, which was caused by a space heater that was too close to flammable materials. According to the department, the fire caused a total of $600,000 in damage to a commercial center located at 5602 Clay Ave.

The department pointed out that the fire caused US$400,000 in damage to the structure and US$200,000 in damage to the content.

AFD said the fire was limited to one unit, which was later identified as Suite A. No one was seriously injured, but one person and a firefighter were slightly injured at the scene.

The department said in a tweet: "Space heaters are called...for a reason...because they need space." "So as the temperature drops, remember: give those space heaters enough space! "
